Family Background – Supporting Families course

Hey everyone, so yesterday I started my 8th (of out 10) courses for my post grad course in Applied Counselling. The course is called Supporting Families and it teaches us how to deal with clients as a family unit. One of the assignments involved are extremely self-reflective, which is a good thing in this field, but it involves a lot of looking into our OWN families. To start things off the instructor gave us a handout that I wanted to share with all of you because I found it to be VERY interesting.

Complete these sentences that apply to the time when you were between the ages of 1 and 18 years old.

1. the happiest time in my family was …

2. My father can best be described by …

3. My mother can best be described by…

4.The most upsetting times in my family were…

5. The person who most trustworthy in my family was..

6. The person who showed the most emotion was…

7. Children are…

8. Fathers are…

9. Mothers are…

10. Discipline in my home was…

11. When I left home my parents felt…

12. The most commonly displayed emotion in my home was…

13. My home could best be decried by the words…

14. I would like my current and future family life to be decried by the words…

if any of you would like me to email a word document copy of this worksheet to you let me know and I can do so.

Let me just say, I think if my family read my answers they might be a little surprised, …..and then, maybe they wouldn’t be. But  I know for sure that my sister and I would NOT answer these the same.

Just incase this brings about any unresolved personal conflicts … it’s the ethical thing to do…

I arrived at your blog this morning via a link from http://www.drchana.com and I absolutely loved what you wrote and it did bring a smile to my face….. As I understand (I think) how our family experiences shape us ( in more ways than one could ever believe) and that no two children or even the parents would answer the questions above or reflect on or remember events the same way … I would love to receive a copy of the handout questions in word format … And I will be following your blog …. Thank you for sharing and I wish you much success. Sandra
